Shell Hearts and Minds Program

Challenges

A Real Situation

Construction work on a mega project began in October 2006. The project’s total workforce peaked at 13,000 people  across 3 sites.
There was heavy reliance on supervisors to get the workers to deliver results with respect to quality, safety and  productivity. However, the workers were relatively new and supervisors that had been previously trained and groomed had for other projects.

13,000 positions needed to be filled and once filled they need to be out there finishing the job.  Deadlines still have to be met. Budgets still have to be managed. People still have to go home safe. What would you do? Show some charts to the workers and things will be better?

Client Goals

Implement the Hearts and Minds Program across Houdini.

Give supervisors and middle management leadership tools.

Develop ownership among contractors and individuals.

How we achieved Clients Goals

Contractors were encouraged to engage their own trainers to train their supervisory staff. The best trainers would be the ones from the contractors themselves because they could share and relate with each other. Trainers were “recruited” from contractors.

We gave skills to the trainers from the contractors to deliver their own workshops under our care.

Our Key Focus

Pass on the passion and the desire to do the right thing. Give them tools to use and immediately share with others.

Results

Contractors taking ownership, using the materials and the training for their own workshops.

Contractors seeing the benefits of improving their own cultures and their people.

An improved culture on the whole of the project where there was a real bond even among different companies or individuals.

Achieving a mega success.
