Dengue Emergency Singapore

Singapore says it is facing a dengue "emergency" as it grapples with an outbreak of the seasonal disease that has come unusually early this year. Last year 2021 Singapore had 5258 cases of Dengue, today we already have 11,670 cases before June 1. June is known as the peak dengue season in Singapore.

But this is not just Singapore. Countries around the world with tropical climates are a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes which case Dengue.

For those unfamiliar with Dengue, Dengue causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches and body pains. People feel lethargic. In extreme cases, bleeding, breathing difficulties, organ failure and even death can occur.

The outbreak of Dengue this year 2022 has been worsened by the weather conditions with the prolonged hot weather followed by heavy downpours.

Doctors are well aware of the seasonal Dengue issues and have said that they are now seeing a sharp rise in the number of patients with dengue-related ailments.

What people can do to reduce the chances of getting Dengue is reducing the potential to be bitten and to reduce the possibility of mosquitos in their homes.

Home owners can install mosquito nets on their windows.

They should also look for places where mosquitos can breed and remove those.

Stagnant water should be cleared as soon as possible.

They could also spray insecticide regularly in their homes and outside their doors
